Central Europe
The Central European features, reflected even in contemporary urban
patterns, institutions and customs, are mainly the products of the past 100
years. However, Budapest acquired true significance during the course of its
long history whenever it functioned as a centre of a region far larger than
Hungary: Budapest was elevated from among the urban centers of the eastern part
of Europe by the energies of Central Europe, and became the most important city
east of Vienna.
