From the Pest end of the bridge the panorama of Buda unfolds before us.
Towards the north the view extends to the Buda hills and to
Margaret Bridge on
the Danube. On Castle Hill the graceful spire of the Church of Our Lady rises
high above us, with the turrets and terraces of the
Fishermen's Bastion in
front, and the remains of the old castle walls below it. Baroque church towers
rise above the great mass of houses of Water Town. Opposite us stands the
Royal Palace, with its medieval fortifications.
To the south we see the rocky
Gellért Hill with the Citadel and the Liberation monument on top.The newest bridge over the Danube, Elizabeth Bridge, inaugurated in 1903 and reconstructed in 1964, is 380 meters (417 yds.) long and 27.5 meters (30.5 yds.) wide. Further down we see Liberty Bridge and, in the distance, Petôfi Bridge.
