Flanders Opera, Ghent

Designed by Louis Roelandt

On the 31st of May, 1698, the Municipal Theatre was inaugurated with Lully's opera Thesée. This theatre burnt down on the 16th of December 1715. On the same place a new theatre was built. At that time the theatre was in the possession of the Saint-Sebastian guild. In 1812 the theatre came in the hands of the city. The theatre was broken down in 1837.
Three years later, on the 30th of August 1840, the new opera house was opened. It was designed by Louis Roelandt in the neo-classic style. In 1911, the opera house was expanded with an entrance hall, designed by Charles van Rhysselberghe.
The opera house was closed in 1988 for reasons of security. The restoration started in 1989. The opera of Ghent was re-opened on the 2nd of September 1993 with Verdi's Otello.
