Los Angeles Opera

The Los Angeles Opera (L.A. Opera) is located at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, one of the three theaters that comprise the Music Center of Los Angeles County. The Company made its debut in October, 1986 with a new production of Verdi's Otello starring Placido Domingo. In its first nine seasons, the L.A. Opera has established itself among the leading opera companies of the United States through its imaginative presentation of masterpieces from the traditional operatic repertoir, the performing of new and seldom produced works, and the development and nurturing of American artists.

In 1984, the Association hired Peter Hemmings to be the first General Director and gave him the task of creating a company. Hemmings had previously run the Scottish Opera and the Australian Opera and had just completed a five-year tenure as managing director of the London Synphony Orchestra.

Placido Domingo, one of the world's foremost tenor, has served as the company's Artistic Consultant since 1984. This season Mr. Domingo was named Artistic Advisor and Principal Guest Conductor. In that capacity, he advises Hemmings on a wide range of artistic matters. He also performs regularly with the company as a singer and a conductor.

L.A. Opera has presented such world-renowned artists as June Anderson, Thomas Allen, Placido Domingo, Maria Ewing, Galina Gorchakova, Thomas Hampson, Marilyn Horne, Siegfried Jerusalem, Gwyneth Jones, Julia Migenes, Leona Mitchell, James Morris, Leonie Rysanek, Ilona Tokody, Frederica von Stade, Ealynn Voss and Marilyn Zschau.

Among the Company's most noteworthy productions are Salome directed by Sir Peter Hall and Tristan und Isolde directed by Jonathan Miller, conducted by Zubin Mehta. Last year the company presented the rare staging of Manuel Penella's El Gato Montes, starring Domingo which will be broadcast nationally this year on the "Great Performances" program of the Public Television.
