Munich's opera history began in 1651 and since then has seen many first-time-ever performances, with Mozart, Wagner and Strauss operas among them. These composers are consequently referred to as the "three house gods" and make up for a great proportion of today's programme. With the advent of director Peter Jonas, however, there was a slight shift towards contemporary and baroque opera.
Since the Bayerische Staastsoper company does not have a theatre of its own, performances take place in different places, mainly in the Nationaltheater (built 1811-1818, see pic 1&2) and the Altes Residenztheater (AKA Cuvilliéstheater, built 1751-1753 and renowned for its Rokoko interior - see pic 3). Both theatres had to be rebuilt after World War II.
The annual opera festival in July is a major attraction - performances are sold out months before.
