Civic Theatre, San Diego

Designed by:

Rosser, Kennedy and Ruocco, architectural design firm
Bolt Beranek and Newman, architectural accoustic design firm

In 1965 the city of San Diego completed the Civic Theatre in the heart of downtown at the intersection of Third Avenue and B Street, and as a part of the inauguration of the building, San Diego Opera was founded in May that year. The company's first production was of Puccini's La Boheme.

Adjacent to the Civic Theatre is Golden Hall, both of which are situated on the Civic Concourse, a central location in the city for public functions and small conventions and conferences. The San Diego Opera offices are in the Civic Center Plaza, an 18-story office building located on the Concourse.

Currently the San Diego Opera performs five operas each January through May in the Civic Theatre, plus concerts and recitals in the San Diego Opera Recital Series.

See list of productions in the 1996 season.
