Opera Australia, Sydney

The Sydney Opera House is designed by Jorn Utzon

The Opera Australia performances are given in the Sydney Opera House. This magnificent building stands alone on Bennelong Point surrounded by the waters of Sydney harbour. Designed by the Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, the daring conception won an international competition for the design of a performing arts complex for Sydney.

The building comprises four main auditoria: the Concert Hall (2,690 seats), the Opera Theatre (1,547 seats), the Drama Theatre (544 seats) and the Playhouse (398 seats). There are also four restaurants, one of which offers "takeaway" food, six bars, and a multi-story underground car park (1,200 cars).

Guided tours: There are daily tours (except Christmas day and Easter Friday) of the theatres and foyers for AUS $9, and backstage tours on Sundays and public holidays between 9.00 - 4.00 pm for AUS $13.50.

Whats on ?: A faxed service detailing the current week's performances is available to machines with a polling facility on 61 2 252 1161.

OPERA: Most productions are sung in the original language with surtitles. Facilities exist for hearing impaired patrons.
